The Technology-Related Assessment That Strengthened My Strategic and Technical Thinking
One of the most memorable experiences in my FlexPath business and IT program was a technology-related assessment that required me to wear two hats at once: that of a technical analyst and that of a strategic business leader.
The scenario involved designing a cloud migration strategy for a mid-sized retail company. The fictional organization faced challenges like outdated on-premises servers, inconsistent backup protocols, and a growing need for remote access. At first, I approached the project purely from a technical perspective: assessing bandwidth requirements, evaluating cloud service providers, and outlining security measures.
But the beauty of FlexPath is that it doesn’t confine you to a narrow set of instructions—you’re encouraged to go beyond the minimum. As I dug deeper, I realized that the technical decisions I was making would directly affect operational costs, employee productivity, customer satisfaction, and long-term scalability. This was the turning point where my thinking expanded from “What works technically?” to “What serves the broader business strategy best?”
I created a migration roadmap that included cost-benefit analyses, change management strategies, staff training modules, and disaster recovery planning. This holistic approach didn’t just check off the academic requirements—it mirrored exactly what I would need to do in the real world.
The impact on my professional life was immediate. Not long after completing the assessment, my workplace began discussing moving parts of our infrastructure to the cloud. Because of my FlexPath experience, I could present a comprehensive proposal that balanced technical feasibility with strategic goals, earning recognition from leadership and positioning myself as a go-to resource for technology-driven business improvements.
That one assessment taught me that in today’s business world, technical expertise alone isn’t enough—you have to pair it with strategic insight. FlexPath’s structure gave me the time and flexibility to explore both sides, and it’s a skill I know will continue to serve me in every role I take on.
Article 3 — How Skills from My FlexPath Courses Directly Improved My Work Performance
Before starting my self-paced MBA in IT through FlexPath, I felt confident in my technical skills but less certain about my ability to integrate them with effective business practices. What surprised me most about this journey was how quickly the skills I learned began showing up in my day-to-day work performance.
One of the first big changes was in data analysis. A FlexPath course challenged me to use advanced analytics tools to interpret large datasets and generate actionable insights. In my job, I started applying these same techniques to track system performance and customer behavior. This shift allowed me to present evidence-based recommendations to leadership rather than relying on intuition or incomplete data.
Another skill that had a direct impact was project management. While I had led small technical projects before, FlexPath taught me to apply structured frameworks like Agile and Scrum, even in hybrid work environments. I began setting clear sprint goals, defining measurable deliverables, and managing risk proactively, which dramatically improved project completion rates and reduced scope creep.
Communication was another unexpected area of growth. In one course, I had to prepare executive-level presentations that translated complex IT concepts into language that non-technical stakeholders could understand. That skill has been invaluable—especially when advocating for new technology investments where buy-in from leadership is essential.
FlexPath’s real-world, competency-based model meant that everything I learned had an immediate outlet in my work environment. There was no waiting until the end of the program to see results. The connection between coursework and professional application was instant, and my managers noticed the difference.
Today, I can confidently say that my FlexPath education hasn’t just added lines to my résumé—it has elevated my ability to deliver measurable business value in every project I touch.
